Day 387-390 – 22.-25. May 2014

Day 387: I left Nuzhet after a good breakfast to go to Adana.

I had to go along a very busy road and it was pretty boring. But the terrain was flat and the wind was calm, so I cycled the 90 km in only 5 hours.

When I reached Adana I was looking for a bike shop where Nuzhet arranged a meeting with a friend whom I could stay with. The shop was not easy to reach and at one time I even ended up on the highway. I had to take the next exit and cycled back a few km. After I asked for directions I finally arrived at the bike shop.

The people from the shop knew I was coming and they called someone to pick me up. I had to wait about 3 hours, because as I learned later,Nuzhet friend Izzet had some flooding in his apartment. While I was waiting the people from the shop offered me several glasses of tea and then invited me also for a Adana Kebab. It was very tasty and after another tea and a selection of nuts from the ajecent shop, Izzet arrived.

He was with his bike, so I followed him to a friends apartment. On the way we stopped for a special ice cone and he also quickly fixed a flat tire.

I met Izzet´s friend Hakan, an university student and I stayed at his place for the night.

Day 388: Hakan made an excellent breakfast witch gave me the power to cycle more than 100 km that day.

After I left the city I saw a lot of onion and sunflower fields. The road was not as busy as before but it was hot. I took the time to cool off in a irrigation aqueduct.

In a small city I bought some groceries and 10 km after the city I found a place to camp. Some thnunderstorms with heavy lightning where around me but I was lucky and only received some rain after I had already finished setting up my tent.

Day 389: The next morning the weather was nice again.

The day started by climbing 900m to a pass. It took me a few hours and when I reached the top a thunderstorm was just developing. I quickly decent to 500m and managed to get away from the weather.

Now I had to climb again. At about 5pm I reached a very small town and found a restaurant. I ate a chicken kebab and met some younger Turkish people who now live in the UK.

Just before reaching the top of the pass, I found a place to stay. At exactly 1000m I camped for the night. I had a wonderful view over the valley.

Day 390: In the morning a shepperd with his sheep came by and we „talked“ for a while.

I had only 45 km to go to Gaziantep and after a 100m climb I reached the top. There I met a group of Jordan and Spanish volunteers and we had a nice conversation.

The rest of the road was mostly downhill and so I reached Gaziantep much earlier than I expected.

I met with Emily and Beyhan whom I met in the hostel in Cyprus. After a shower and new cloth I went to Beyhan´s shop and also met Christa from Cyprus again.

IMG_3744 IMG_3746

Christa is a neighbor of Emily and Beyhan and so I ended up showing my Photos to her and a nice older sailing couple who lives also in the same building. After to much wine I was glad to sleep on a comfortable couch.

Day 387: 98,15 km  all: 11.516 km

Day 384-386 – 19.-21. May 2014

Day 384: After all the missleading information about the ferry schedule I was not sure if there really was a boat today.

I packed my stuff and made a last picture with my new friends I cycled to the port.

After 10 minutes I arrived at the port and there was really a boat waiting.

I quickly purchased a ticket, went to the passport control, got my exit stamp and without any further check I could go on board.

I secured my bike and took some valuable things out. The departure was at 2pm and when I got to the upper deck we were already on the way. Good that I decided to go to the port early.

The sail took seven hours and at 7:30pm we reached Taşucu.

After a quick passport check I got my entry stamp and was back in Turkey.

Now my „holidays“ are over and my rule (no engine) is in effect again.

It was already getting dark so I cycled 5km to the nearest beach and put my tent up.

Day 385: In the I noticed that I chose a nice place to camp.

I made arrangements to stay at a warm showers host this evening. (it´s like couchsurfing but for cyclists)

I had time to get to Mersin till after 5pm. The terrain was flat so I could take my time.

Nuzhed and I met in front of her apartment building. After she helped me carry my stuff to her apartment and I took a shower we talked while she was preparing dinner.

Because her mother was German she speaks german very good. In the evening two of her cycling friends Benan and Ozlem came for a very tasty dinner.

After we ate I showed them some pictures and we talked about our traveling. It was a very nice evening.

Nuzhed convinced me to stay another day because she wanted to show me around.

Day 386: After Nuzhed came back from work at 11am we jumped in her 4wheel drive car and headed for the nearby mountains. I saw a very different side of Mersin. It is a very beautiful mountainous area with small villages and manny small fruit plantations.

We stopped for lunch and drove to a mountain top for a tea.

After a few hours we came back to the cost and the weather was very different at the sea. In the mountains we had to where a jacket and the wind was cold. On the cost it was hot and humid.

Nuzhed is very adventurers. She is always outside cycling, walking, trekking, camping and visiting other countries. She gave me a lot of helpful tips where to go and also set me up with my next host.

It was very fortunate to meet her.

Day 384: 9,25 km  all: 11.334 km

Day 385: 83,20 km  all: 11.418 km

Day 379-383 – 14.-18. May 2014

Day 379: I sleept very good in my cabin and in the morning we had a basic breakfast.

At 10am we reached the port of Limassol and I was welcomed by the „Red Arrows“, the royal air force jet display team. They flew over our ship and then performed their show over the nerby air force base.

We had to wait for an agent to pick us up and bring us to the passport control. After we passed immigration they sent us to customs. We could not find the customs and so we just went out of the port without any problem.

I said good buy to the Australian guy an started to cycle towards Larnaca.

After 10km I met him again in a cafe close to the road. He took the bus and got off to change buses to go to Nicosia.

The rest of the way to Larnaca was very nice. I had a strong wind from behind and the road was flat, so I was in Larnaca after only 5 hours.

IMG_3372 IMG_3374

I met the german friend we met when we stayed in the hotel in Larnaca and I could stay at his place for the next two days.

Day 380-381: I spend the days relaxing and walking around the city and meeting with my host. It was good to speak german again.

Day 382: I found a time schedule of the ferry boats  from North Cyprus to Turkey and it said there would be a boat on sunday.

I went from Larnaca to Nicosia and crossed the border to North Cyprus. Then I had to cycle another 35km to Kyrenia/Girne. It was again a nice ride with one bigger hill just before Kyrenia.

Frist I went to the port and looked for some information about the next ferry. It was past 5pm so I only talked to a police man. He did not know if there was a boat the next day and just recommend to come back early in the morning.

I cycled to the old harbor and to the hostel where we stayed the last time. The manager remembered me and I got a bed for a good price.

At the evening I met some other guests and one turkish guy told me there is no ferry going the next day. We looked it up in the internet and found out the fast passenger ferry start only in june and the next car ferry leaves in two days.

Now I had time to get to know the other travelers and we had a very nice night out.

Day 383: After I had a little bit of sleep I went back to the port. Nobody was there but I found a leaflet with some information about the next ferry.

In the afternoon we decided to make a barbecue on the roof and everybody helped preparing and cooking the meal.

Day 379: 76,73 km  all: 11.249 km

Day 382: 76,59 km  all: 11.325 km

Day 376-378 – 11.-13. May 2014

Day 376: After almost one month on the boat I was on the road again.

I had to cycle to Haifa to buy my ticket for the ship to Limassol.

The first day I went along the cost to the north. The conditions were almost perfect. It was not to hot and the terrain was flat. Only the traffic was a bit to mutch.

But after 60 km my muscles got tired after such a long absence from cycling.

I found a place to camp and had enough time to make dinner and enjoy the sunset.

Day 377: At 9 am I started cycling to Haifa. The road was still flat and easy and after 35 km I reach the city.

I quickly found the agency and bought my Ticket. It was not very cheap. 250€ for a overnight trip, including a cabin with dinner and breakfast. The Israeli exit tax of about 25€ was also included.

Now I had time till next day at 3pm. I needed a place for the night. I remeberd when we came to Haifa with the sailboat there was a small park very close to the marina.

Because it was only 4km away I decided to check it out.

Due to some railways and highways I had to take some detours and after another 12km I found a nice secluded place in the park. I enjoyed the sun for some hours and had enough time to set up ma tent.

IMG_3314 IMG_3322

Day 378: The next day I stayed in the park till about 1pm and left for the port again.

Well before 3pm I was waiting for the agent who picked us up and went through immigration, customs and passport control. At 4pm we entered the ship and could go to our cabin.

The cabin was fairly big and everything was clean and the shower was very refreshing.

At 5pm we had dinner and at about 7pm we left the port and put out to sea.

IMG_3347 IMG_3351

Only 3 other passengers were on board. On of them was from Australia and he is traveling for about 8 month now through Indonesia, Thailand, China, Nepal, India, Egypt, Israel and some other countries. So we talked about our trips and experiences the rest of the evening.

Day 376: 63,00 km  all: 11.100 km

Day 377: 58,48 km  all: 11.158 km

Day 378: 13,70 km  all: 11.172 km

Day 348-375 – 13. April – 10. May 2014

After I was back in Tel Aviv on the boot I relaxed a few days and afterwords tried to find a way back to Cyprus.

I searched the internet, send some e-mails and even went to the other marina 10 km north of Tel Aviv to find a boot to Cyprus or Turkey.

One sailing club even put my request on their Facebook page, but unfortunately nothing was succsesfull.

In the meantime I read a few books and we had some couch-surfing visitors.

Sometimes Elad was gone for work  and I was the stuart of the boot and took care of our guest.

We had

Sara and Ulrika, from Sweden,

Pierre from France, he lives and works in Etheopia,

and Adrian also from France.

We had a good time together on the „Grand Illusion“.

Elad got a tip from on of his friends, call a ship agency in Haifa and found a weekly boot from Haifa to Limassol.

So finally I could continue my journey.

Two days before I left, Elad and I had a very nice sailing day with perfect weather and wind.

I was very fortunate and thankful to meet Elad and we had a great time together.

Thank you Elad.

Day 342-347 – 7.-12. April 2014

After a few nice days at Sea of Galilee I circled the lake and spend another night close to the lake.IMG_3139

First I took the paved road but then I followed a bike road leading me on a very bad road to a small obstacle.

IMG_3147 IMG_3149

The river was not very deep and so I took my shoes off and pushed my bike through the wather.

I was happy to be on the paved road again and continues to the west side of the lake where I stayed the night.

After a good night in the tent I had to climb out of the Jordan valley. From -200m I climbed to 500m. From there on it was a good ride down to the cost.

After 95 km it was time to find a place to stay. In the sanddunes close to a big power plant I found a good place to put my tent.

IMG_3183 IMG_3178

The next day I still had to go 60 km to meet with my friend Illan and his family again.

The weather was nice and because the terrain was flat I had some time to collect some flowers and compose my 11.000km picture.

IMG_3186 IMG_3213

It was a happy reunion and I stayed two days at Illan´s place.

IMG_3231 IMG_3229

Illan left for Australia and I made the short trip back to the Tel Aviv marina to Elad and his boot.

Now after 3 weeks and 1200km through Israel and Jordan the circe was closed. I had a good time and had some great experiences.

Day 342: 39,40 km  all: 10.851 km

Day 343: 95,50 km  all: 10.946 km

Day 344: 63.27 km  all: 11.009 km

Day 347: 27,29 km  all: 11.037 km

Exactly 1 year ago on May 1. 2013 at 12:00 I started my journey.
